Introduction

Family nurse practitioner students (FNPS) must set realistic and professional goals because they are essential for guiding our careers and ensuring a smooth transition from registered nurse to advanced practice registered nurse (APRN). As new APRNs, we will be novices once more, just as we were when we graduated from nursing school, and we must do everything possible to make the transition as smooth as possible. New APRNs often have unrealistic expectations, which makes the transition more difficult and increases anxiety (Poje, 2016) and the risk of failure in their new profession. The purpose of this paper is to identify at least three short and long-term goals, explain why I chose them and how they relate to my professional career development, and develop a strategic plan for achieving each of those goals.

Short term

  • FNPS must set objectives that are particular, measurable, attainable, suitable, and time-limited, and they must be specified, quantifiable, achievable, appropriate, and time-limited (College of Nurses of Ontario [CNO], 2014). They must create and ensure that their goals are focused and present a clear idea of what they want to achieve or master (CNO, 2014), which includes the following:

They work for about 8-12 hours per day and must stay over or go home to complete documentation on all of the clients they saw due to a lack of time during the office visit. If the problem persists, the APRN’s stress level rises and their job satisfaction falls (Flinter, 2012), affecting their professional development and making them want to leave their job.
  • I need to learn the necessary skills so that by the end of 2018, I will be able to perform the proper procedures and be able to properly care for the patients, as measured by the number of successful procedures. Because of their lack of experience, many APRNs are required to review the clinic’s policies and procedures manual or look up information on the internet on a regular basis. Having the necessary skills can assist APRNs in becoming competent providers, which is linked to the advancement of a professional career (Flinter, 2012). Clients will not want to return if the providers are unqualified, since this will have a bad influence on their career.

Long term

  • By the end of 2020, I need to gain the confidence to educate patients so that they can and will learn everything they need to know about their medications and conditions, as measured by not having to look things up all the time. I chose this goal because it is critical for an APRN to understand all of the different prescription drugs and disorders that people face and to be able to teach them how to avoid complications. Patients will feel more comfortable having NPs as primary care providers if they have confidence (Flinter, 2012), which is linked to their professional advancement.
  • As measured by having my place of employment, I intend to work hard so that I can save money and be able to start my own business by the middle of 2022. I chose this aim because I want to one day run my own company, be able to treat patients, and not have to be in such a rush to earn money instead of caring for customers, as most clinics do today. Due to the issues facing APRNs and dissatisfaction with the tasks and obligations influencing professional growth, the United States has a scarcity of health care professionals (Flinter, 2012). There are some things I disagree with, and owning a business allows me to change or improve some of those aspects.
  • I need to continue my study in order to get a doctor of nursing practice (DNP) degree by 2020, as shown by finishing the program and receiving a certificate. I chose this aim because it is something I want to pursue in the future and I feel it is possible if people work hard to achieve their goals. The DNP will not provide me with more funds for obtaining it in many areas, but it will assist me in progressing in my professional career and opening new doors.

  • Creating a tailored strategy to help me in achieving all of those objectives is one method to do so. Objectives 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6, which are about learning, building skills and confidence, and receiving the DNP, are all within reach and can be accomplished. APRNs must begin attending clinical case conferences or workshops, taking online or in-person lectures, reading journal articles, completing online training courses, examining case studies, being mentored, and participating in webinars (Thabault, Mylott, & Patterson, 2015 and CNO, 2014).

Other strategic plans that I intend to execute are:

  • Working as a team with medical assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, physician assistants, and shared human resources including dieticians, managers, pharmacists, behavioralists, and diabetes educators (Flinter, 2012).
  • Getting better at managing my time by being more regimented with it, adopting productivity-boosting tactics (Perkel, 2015), keeping and refocusing patients on the work at hand, remaining focused, developing a pattern and making adjustments as needed, and not wasting time being distracted.
  • Working hard, not spending money on useless items and only purchasing what I need, not going out as much to save money, eating at home and bringing my lunch, and other measures. This will help me achieve my goal of owning a company. Because I am about to finish this program and am debt-free, doing these simple things works beautifully and saves money. APRNs earn decent money, but I’ve discovered that the more money they make, the more they spend, and this has to alter in order to achieve their aim.
